On this trip through the western part of the US, driving my sister’s camper from Montana back to her house in Marin County, California, I got to pass through a few photographic ‘meccas’ — locations where the titans of American photography worked: Adams, Weston, Curtis, and others. This makes it both inspiring and sobering territory for making images.

I’ve been very fortunate to see a number of spectacular meteorological phenomena over the years: tornados, wall clouds, mammatus and lenticular clouds, the aurora, and others. But November 16th, 2016, on the high plains outside of Winnemucca, Nevada, ranks as the top from a pure visual impact standpoint.

September saw me back in my beloved Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, passing through the Canadian side to re-enter the US on Lac La Croix for a few nights of camping with family and friends. I was looking for a good opportunity to do some B&W shots during this trip, specifically, and welcomed the opportunity for a number of days with no cell service, no internet and some fresh fish with my brothers.
