Jean Pierre Jacquet, Stone Carver, Burnsville, Minnesota, 2019
Master Stone Carver

This past week I spent a delightful late afternoon and early evening to make a portrait of Jean Pierre Jacquet, a Master Stone Carver from Avignon, France, who now works and resides in Burnsville, Minnesota. I became aware of Jean Pierre and his extraordinary stone work through social media posts by his wife, who happens to be a high school classmate of mine. Though we had not stayed in touch, really, we connected in the lead-up to a recent class reunion, and I had the pleasure of meeting them there last summer. After work one afternoon last week, I drove out to their lovely, wooded house in Burnsville, where I found Jean Pierre moving around some large blocks of stone in their driveway.

The Creative Spaces Project

For some time, I had wanted to shoot a portrait of my wife, Leigh Beatty, working in her print-making studio in our basement. It’s a place of equal and endless interest for me and for our cats, who always lurk outside her door when she’s working, ready bolt in and flop on the floor at the slightest opportunity. They aren’t allowed in. I don’t go in, either, except for occasional trips to a storage closet in her space that holds winter clothing. Or when she’s working and I need to talk about something. But the visits are strictly needs-based and furtive.

I don’t spend many of my journal entries talking about gear. It’s an occasional diversion, but by and large I try to keep my ramblings focused on the creative side of making images. But a couple of weekends ago, right before the latest Polar Vortex enveloped Minnesota, I spent the weekend up at the cabin with Leigh. It was still pretty cold. Sunday we were going birding at the Sax-Zim bog, and that day turned out to be some serious cold, with nearly -30°F in the morning near Cotton, Minnesota.

Low Light Wonder

It was only after working on this shot for a little bit that I looked at the EXIF data from the image and noticed that the ISO was at 16,000! I was floored. While I was used to good low-light performance from the A7ii, the ability of the A7iii to capture this scene – hand held, no less – at that super high ISO and produce the image as well as it did was astounding to me. Perhaps still as a legacy of growing up shooting film, the concept of shooting usable images with only moderate grain at ISO 16,000 is just jaw-dropping.
